Here are some important facts to consider when choosing wallpaper.
- Choose the right type of wallpaper to suit your needs
There is a wide variety of wallpaper to choose from, including variants in style and colour. Vinyl is best suited for areas with moisture such as the kitchen or bathroom. For dryer living spaces such as bedrooms & hallways, we recommend the use of non-woven papers and fabrics.
- Choose the right adhesive for your chosen wallpaper
Specific papers have specific adhesives, knowing the difference between paper and vinyl wallpaper is key. Figuring out what type of wallpaper you have is simple, just check the package label.
- Round up your measurements
By rounding your measurements up, you will have extra paper to work with. We recommend that you order two to four more rolls than required. As mistakes are bound to occur, whether the wallpaper is installed professionally or not, a range may also be discontinued, so it would be good to have a little extra.
- Leveling is imperative
Your paper must be level, make sure that your house is level too. Ensure that your first sheet is perfectly level. If not, get out your measuring tape!
- Start with smooth walls
Start by lightly sanding the wall on witch you wish to apply the wallpaper. Thereafter, scrub the wall down with a wet sponge and some liquid detergent.
- Know where you are going before you begin
Always plot where your seems will go before starting. By not doing this you might end up with a mismatched pattern.
- Do not re-use razors
Purchase razors in bulk as they dull quickly. Try to keep your cuts lean in order to avoid rips.
- “Book” the wallpaper
Booking is gently folding both ends of the paper, paste side in, towards the centre of the strip, without creasing the folds. You should see the pattern. Now let the strip rest for the amount of time recommended by the manufacturer, this is usually about 10 minutes.
If you do not book your wallpaper it will expand once it is on the wall, thus causing creases and bubbles.
- Use a wallpaper sweep
Ensure that you use a wallpaper sweep and NOT a wallpaper brush. They are available widely.
- Don’t panic if you see bubbles
During installation it is most likely air will get trapped in. This is normal and should disappear as wallpaper settles and the adhesive dries. If you se that the bubbles stay, just puncture the bubble with a small needle and flatten the wallpaper onto the wall with the wallpaper sweep.
